The Engineering Graduate School Environment Water of IAHR (International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research) is a network of several international institutions which offer courses at a high academic level on water and environmental related fields. The courses are directed to graduate students, post-graduates and professionals. For academic recognition, the European credit point system ECTS and an appropriate quality control are applied.

Course Concept

The short course offers an introduction and overview of recent and newly developed hydro-numerical, hydrological and information modeling methods and techniques to efficiently solve research and practical problems in hydro- and environmental engineering. The main focus is put on generalized modeling methods and their broad application fields in modeling hydrological, subsurface, free-surface and technical flow and transport processes including the interactions in natural and urban hydrosystems. Potentials and limitations of nowadays modeling of hydrosystems are demonstrated. Innovations, challenges and future trends in this field will be pointed out and discussed.

The participants should be enabled to briefly go into the depth of the application fields by themselves after the course and to benefit from the similarities of the presented modeling methods.

The short course is structured in four topics: generalized modeling methods, hydrological modeling, subsurface flow modeling and free-surface flow modeling. Among overviews and theoretical backgrounds, it provides computer demonstrations and applications from research and practical projects. The short course can be used for personal consultations with the course lecturers as well as for open discussions among the course participants.

Target Group

The course is directed to researchers, MSc and PhD students as well as practical engineers from engineering offices, industry and administration who want to broaden their knowledge in modeling of hydrosystems for a better solution of their research or practical work.

Prerequisites

Participants should have basic knowledge in hydromechanics, hydrology and computer sciences. Further knowledge about rainfall-runoff, subsurface, free-surface and sewage plants flow and transport processes is desirable, however not mandatory.

Program

The course will be performed at five days with four sessions of 1.5 - 2 hours. The lectures mainly consist of presentations together with some computer demonstrations and applications. Lecture notes will be offered for all topics. An ice-breaker and a sight-seeing event is included in the overall program. The following topics will be presented and discussed: GENERALIZED MODELING METHODS:

  • numerical modeling
  • information modeling and processing
  • model integration

HYDROLOGICAL MODELING:

  • (rural) hydroloy
  • urban hydrology
  • sewage plants

SUBSURFACE FLOW MODELING:

  • groundwater
  • transport
  • unsaturated zone, water-gas flow

FREE-SURFACE FLOW MODELING:

  • river flow
  • coastal flow
  • morphodynamics

Academic Recognition

After successful completion of a short examination at the end of the course, the participants will receive a certificate equivalent to 3 ECTS.
