The Engineering Graduate School Environment Water of IAHR (International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research) is a network of several international institutions which offer courses at a high academic level on water/environment related fields. The courses are directed to graduate students, post-graduates and professionals. For academic recognition, the European credit point system ECTS and an appropriate quality control are applied.
The short course offers an
overview of recent and newly developed hydrodynamic, hydrological
and information modeling methods and techniques to efficiently solve
research and practical problems in hydro- and environmental
engineering. The main focus is put on generalized methods,
different modeling approaches and their collaboration with
information processing to model rainfall-runoff, free-surface
and subsurface flow and transport processes as well as their
interactions in hydrosystems. The short course wants to show the
possibilities as well as the limitations of nowadays modeling of
hydrosystems, and it will point out some directions of future
It is structured in three topics: hydrodynamic modeling, hydrological modeling and information modeling. Among overviews and theoretical backgrounds, it provides computer demonstrations and applications from research and practical projects. The short course can be used for personal consultations with the course lectures as well as for open discussions among the course participants.
The course is directed to researchers, MSc and PhD students as well as practical engineers from industry and administration who want to broaden their knowledge in modeling of hydrosystems for a better solution of their research or practical work.
Participants should have basic knowledge in hydromechanics, hydrology and computer sciences. Further knowledge about rainfall-runoff, free-surface and subsurface flow and transport processes is desirable, however not mandatory.
The course will be performed at five days with four sessions of 1.5-2 hours. The lectures mainly consist of presentations together with some computer demonstrations and applications. Lecture notes will be offered for all topics. HYDRODYNAMIC MODELING:

- flow and transport processes in subsurface and surface-water systems
- hydrological models for different spatial scales and processes

- model uncertainty and sensitity
- mass data in water-related projects
- information modeling techniques
- Web-based information systems in the hydrosciences
After successful completion of a short examination at the end of the course, the participants will receive a certificate equivalent to 3 ECTS.
