Short Course Modeling of Flow Transport and Reaction Processes in Surface Waters

The short course offers an overview and an introduction of recently and newly developed modeling methods and techniques for simulating flow, transport and reaction processes in different kind of surface-water systems to efficiently solve research and practical problems in hydro- and environmental engineering. An emphasis will be put on the similarities in the processes, the modeling methods and their techniques in the different  systems and on the interactions between natural and urban surface-water systems. Potentials and limitations of nowadays modeling of surface-water systems are demonstrated. Innovations, challenges and future trends in this field will be pointed  out and discussed.
The participants should be enabled to briefly go into the depth of the application fields independently after the course and to benefit from the similarities in the processes as well as the modeling methods and techniques.
The short course deals with general modeling methods, water cycle, floods, CFD, sediment transport, lakes and wastewater treatment with a focus on modeling the relevant processes. Among overviews and theoretical backgrounds, it provides computer demonstrations and applications from research and practical projects. The short course can be used for personal consultations with the course lecturers as well as for open discussions among the course participants.

IAHR-EGW and TTP Wasser Activity

The Engineering Graduate School Environment Water (EGW) of the International Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research (IAHR) is a network of several international institutions which offer  ademically-orientated further education courses  on water and environmental related fields (www.iahr.org).

TTP Wasser is platform for technology transfer between universities and SME (small and medium-sized enterprises) in the region Berlin – Brandenburg. Among other activities, TTP is offering practically-orientated further education courses (www.ttp-wasser.de).
In this joint initiative, we will try to bridge the gap between academic and practical demands.

Target Group

The course is directed to graduate students, post-graduates and professionals from universities, engineering offices, industry as well as administration who want to get an overview about modeling of surface water systems for a better solution of their research or practical work.

Prerequisites

Participants should have basic knowledge in hydromechanics and computer sciences. Further knowledge about modeling, transport and reaction processes, river and lake hydromechanics, flood protection, hydraulic engineering, wastewater treatment plants is helpful, however not mandatory.

Program

The course will be performed at five days with four lectures of 1.5 hours each day. The lectures mainly consist of presentations together with some computer demonstrations. Lecture notes will be offered for all topics. An ice-breaker and a sight-seeing event is included in the overall program. The following topics will be presented and discussed:

MODELING METHODS AND INFORMATION
PRO CESSING:

  • Exploration methods, model set-up
  • Numerical modeling, model integration
  • Information management, monitoring

FLOOD  MODELING:

  • Hydrological approaches
  • Hydro-numerical approaches
  • Integrated approaches

CFD IN THE NEARFIELD OF HYDRAULIC
STRUCTURES:

  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Two-phase flow modeling, turbulence
  • Parallel Computing

SEDIMENT TRANSPORT MODELING:

  • Suspended and bed-load transport
  • Numerics, morphodynamics

LAKE MODELING:

  • Lake hydrodynamics
  • Transport, reaction, water quality

MODELING WASTEWATER TREATMENT:

  • Wastewater treatment plants
  • Water quality, ASM (activated sludge models)
  • Industrial wastewater

Academic Recognition

After successful completion of a short examination at the end of the course, the participants will receive a certificate equivalent to 3 ECTS.

Registration / Fee

The course fee is 300 Euro including lecture notes, refreshments and social events. The rules of the IAHR-EGW allow the following reductions:

20 % reduction for IAHR member:          240 Euro
50 % reduction for active EGW partner: 150 Euro
