Preface

The module Modeling Hydro- and Environmental Systems is an elective compulsory lecture (Wahlpflichtmodul) in the competence field Hydrosciences in the master programme Civil Engineering. It can be chosen as a basis lecture (Basisfach) for other competence fields. It can be chosen as an elective lecture (Ergänzungsfach) in the master programme Environmental Technology and as an elective lecture (Wahlpflicht-Kernfachbezogen, Ingenieurfach) in the master programme Geotechnology.

The module is conducted in English.

Objectives and content

In recent years numerical simulation methods have strongly gained importance in hydro- and environmental sciences. They are used as prediction tools for natural and anthropogenic flow and transport processes during the planning and designing of measurements in hydro- and environmental systems.

The lecture gives an introduction to numerical modeling concepts for flow and transport processes in groundwater and in surface waters. After physical model concepts for the processes are presented, the lecture deals with discretisation and stabilisation methods (FDM, FEM, FVM) to solve the governing equations. Aspects of data processing, i.e. pre- and post-processing, are addressed. Different modeling systems are introduced in exercises dealing with engineering applications.

Basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and mathematics is desirable. After completing this course, students will be able to choose and apply suitable modeling methods for specific engineering tasks in the field of hydro- and environmental sciences.

  • Fundamental principles of flow and transport processes in surface waters (shallow water equations, turbulence modeling)

  • Modeling systems for groundwater and surface water flow
