Preface
The module Water Resources Management is an elective compulsory lecture (Wahlpflichtmodul) in the competence field Hydrosciences [2] in the master programme Civil Engineering. It can also be chosen as a basis lecture (Basisfach) for other competence fields. It can be chosen as an elective lecture (Ergänzungsfach) in the master programme Environmental Technology and as an elective lecture (Wahlpflicht-Kernfachbezogen, Ingenieurfach) in the master programme Geotechnology.
The lecture is carried out in cooperation with Ingenieurgesellschaft Prof. Dr. Sieker mbh [3].
The module is conducted in English. Lecture notes are provided in English and German.
Objectives and content
Water Resources Management deals with the utilisation of water resources and the protection against water. It includes aspects of water quality, ecology and economy. Based on field measurements and deterministic or stochastic models, predictions of natural and human influenced hydrological processes are carried out for planning, designing and managing of water resources systems.
The lecture teaches statistical methods, reservoir and flood risk management, water pollution and river rehabilitation in the context of multi-criteria-assessment and the EU-Water-Framework Directive.
The lecture comprises 6 ECTS and consists of 2 parts: 9 integrated lectures (3h each) in the first half of the semester and a one-week short course Modeling in Water Resources Management in the second half of the semester.
Contents of the module:
- Statistical methods
- Reservoir management
- Hydrological modeling techniques
- Flood risk management
- Water pollution control and river rehabilitation
- EU-Water Framework Directive
- Multi-criteria-assessment
- Computer exercise with water engineering applications
