Preface

The lecture belongs to the Thematic Spezialization: Hydroinformatics Systems of the international Master Programme Euro Hydro-Informatics and Water Management (see EuroAquae). It is one part of the module 'Coupling of free-surface and groundwater modelling'. The second part 'Free-surface flow modelling' is given by Dr.-Ing. P. Mewis, TU Darmstadt.

Skills and Content

The lecture gives advanced insight into the numerical modeling of flow and transport processes in the subsurface as well as in free-surface flows and it also focusses on the coupling of such systems.

Prof. Hinkelmann: Complete understanding of water resources depends on interaction of groundwater and free-surface flow. Description of groundwater and rock-flow processes will be given in term of differential equations and common numerical schemes (Finite-Difference, Finite- Element, Finite Volume Methods). Attention will be given to transport phenomena of pollutants. Aspects of integration of small to large scale processes will be discussed and principles for coupling of software for integrating processes with free surface flows presented. An introduction to computing on highspeed computer (paralell and cluster computing) will be given.

Dr. Mewis: Modelling of free surface in rivers, lakes and coastal water will be presented; the basic numerical schemes will be presented (FD, FV, FE); numerical and computational aspects will be discussed; crucial effects of physics and its representation in simulation software will be demonstrated; calibration and validation of model will shown.
