Motivation and Objective

Urban water systems are stressed by numerous loads resulting from urban contaminations, treated wastewater discharges, shipping and recreation activities, just to mention a few. The numerical simulation of flow and transport processes in such surface water systems has become a powerful tool to make preditions about water quantity and quality aspects for current as well as for changing conditions being the results of engineering measures, climate or demographic changes. The important questions deal with lake dynamics, spreading of conservative tracers or whether treated waste water which should leave the system can be transported in the opposite direction into the water system due to unfavourable hydraulic conditions.

Project area

In this project, the Unterhavel water system in Berlin, Germany is chosen, which consists of a shallow lake (Wannsee) and some channels. This lake has of course limnic character and is therefore characterized by slow flow velocities.

Numerical Simulation

The program JANET has been used to set up the model and the pre-processing. For the numerical simulation of the flow and transport processes, the modelling system TELEMAC 2D und 3D has been chosen. The 2D simulations deal with different hydrodynamic (mean and extreme water and discharge, bottom friction, influence of wind, turbulence) and transport conditions (different contaminants, sources, turbulence). In addition, a 3D model will be set up to investigate the 3D flow and transport processes, which are, for example important after storm events, and to compute the contamination as well as turbulence in different depths.
