Numerical Simulation of Water Quality and Sediment Transport in Nile River Considering Climate Change

In the upcoming decades, the potential threats of water are predicted to increase dramatically and this is partially because of climate change which has a great effect on both water quality as well as sediment transport. Egypt is mainly depending on the Nile River with 95% of its renewable water resources. In Egypt few trials have been conducted for numerical simulation of the water quality in parts of the Nile River downstream Aswan High Dam (AHD) or in other water streams. The framework that will be used to evaluate water flow and sediment transport requires generally the following three types of model formulations: hydrodynamic, sediment transport and water quality models. TELEMAC-MASCARET model for 2D flow will be used in simulation of sediment transport and water quality.

The general objectives of the developed models are to:

  1. Predict the impact of climate change on the water quality of the Nile River downstream AHD.
  2. Predict the impacts of climate change on sediment transport of the Nile River downstream AHD.
  3. Predict the relationship between sediment transport and water quality.
  4. Present deteriorated locations and extreme dead zones in order to test consequences of reduction in Nile flow and increase in air temperature and finally to test different adaptive measures.
  5. Assess different adaptive measures classified under the hydraulic geometry, and prevention, treatment and control of pollution sources as follows:
    a. Modifying the shapes of cross-sections
    b. Replacing the materials of bottom and embankments with other materials to increase the discharge.
